Claveria Land Care Association wins international Landcare award

At the glittering 2006 National Landcare Awards ceremony held in conjunction with the International Landcare Conference in Melbourne in October, the Claveria Land Care Association won the Rick Farley International Landcare Award. This was the first time that an international landcare award had been made, and it was fitting that in the 10th anniversary year of Philippines Landcare, the Award went to the group that started Philippines Landcare back in 1996. The Claveria-inspired Philippines Landcare program was the first landcare program outside of Australia. President of the Claveria Land Care Association, Manuel Gawangon, accepted the award on behalf of the Association from His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffrey, Governor General of Australia, and followed this up with a very polished and passionate thank-you speech. It was fitting that some of the key project personnel and project associates who have helped the Claveria Land Care Association achieve its success – Agustin (Jun) Mercado, Aurora Laotoco, Evy Elago and Noelyn (Weng) Dano – were able to join Manuel on the stage during the presentation. Our project congratulates Manuel, the Claveria Land Care Association and all of the project staff and others that have been associated with Claveria landcare over the years for gaining this prestigious award.
